Step 3: Rebuild Boot Files
Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 could install on a Legacy BIOS using MBR. However Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 were designed to install on the UEFI BIOS using the EFI bootloader and GPT. When I hold down alt now when booting the mac, I no longer see Windows as an option to boot from. I tried running the Bootrec command again from the Windows 10 USB however it gives the same exact error as shown above in the screenshot, no different. Note that this may remove Virtual PC check or other pre-installed tools.
Using The Installation Disc
To navigate between all the available keyboard layouts, press "See more keyboard layouts". Scan the integrity of your file system and hard drive and run Windows startup repair command prompt via chkdsk. The boot sector contains some code and data that helps BIOS hand off the startup process to Windows. It also hosts the Master Boot Record (MBR), which contains the disk signature, partition table for the disk, and a small bit of code called the master boot code. To repair Windows 10 boot, you can use the Startup Repair tool.
First, make sure that you’re using the same Windows version and edition in your installation media and that the Boot Mode is correct. If they are, we need to rebuild our bcd completely. Make sure that your installation media/recovery disk is the same Windows msvcp71.dll version and edition as the OS you’re trying to fix. If your OS is Windows 8.1 Single Language, use a Windows 8.1 SL installation media, if you have a Windows 10 N OS, use a Windows 10 N installation media, etc.
Here, if the BCD boot file is corrupted or missing, you’re likely to receive a message that reads, "The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors." 7) Select all needed files, and click on theSave button to store them in a safe place.
- Select the system hard disk and choose Rebuild MBR at the drop down menu.
- Many users are asking “how do I manually rebuild BCD in Windows 10”.
- Once you have completed the steps, the Startup Repair will start to scan, detect, and fix any problems that might prevent your Windows 10 from loading correctly.
Here, since you cannot boot your Windows because the Boot Configuration Data file is missing, you can try saving all needed files in a healthy removable drive. 5) Now, select the target drive to recover lost data from Windows whose Boot Configuration Data file is missing. You’ll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don’t have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer." The error ‘Element not found’ is often caused by inactive system partition or if the EFI partition is not assigned a letter.
All you have to do is load up the Recovery Console and run a simple command. All of your data, applications, settings, etc are still intact on the drive and once the MBR is fixed, the computer will load normally. Although Windows now boots and works, the ALT-F10 keys still lead to the same error screen and error code 0xc as I described a couple of posts ago. I also noticed that the hidden 400MB Recovery partition seems to be completely empty, even when viewed from the command line in Windows recovery mode.
This error occurs when users use the ‘bootrec /fixboot’ command in the command prompt. This command is used to repair Windows boot up whenever it is not functioning properly. This issue can turn out be quite critical as you won’t be able to use your computer unless you fix the system’s boot up which can be done using the bootrec command. This means that the system cannot find a Windows installation on your machine.
Solve Boot Configuration Data (missing or corrupt BCD) file problem in Windows 8/8.1/10. Running all these commands will create a new MBR and tell it to use the correct Windows boot loader in order to load that specific installation from your drive. If you are using Windows 10 or Windows 8.1, once your PC boots from the USB drive, you will be asked to choose the keyboard layout that you want to use. When this happens, click or tap on the layout that matches your keyboard.
Press Enter and then type in the Administrator password. Well, it’s actually fairly easy to fix the Master Boot Record in XP and Vista.
